Introducing Mona Lisa!

Queen of A Cowgirl’s Bathroom.

Don’t you just love her?

I’ve been waiting over 7 months to see this sink in my new Art Studio Bathroom … and she was worth the wait.

When Leonardo da Vinci created her, I’m sure he never envisioned Mona as Queen of the Cowgirls – much less as a guardian to a Cowboy’s Sweetheart Cowgirl bathroom throne.

Yes … Mona does the Wild West justice in my humble opinion.

And to make things even better – she has a TWIN SISTER … Mona Lisa Sink number 2, on the opposite side.

And because these two Monas are safely encased inside their glass bowls, water cannot harm them and Windex is their best friend. They don’t even need Cowgirl Hats to protect ‘em from the elements.

Stay tuned – in a few weeks I’ll show you how both of these lovely ladies look – lights, mirrors, and all – side by side.

How cool is THAT, Leonardo?

I’m not sure why, but I think Cowgirls have a thing for old cars & trucks. I’ve been obsessed with them lately.

I’m talkin’ a pure, unadulterated Deb Trotter ~ Cowboy’s Sweetheart kind of car or truck … but most especially, a truck.

Oh, I know what you’re thinking … the title of this post – Cowgirl Artist Ages 4 Years In Ambulance Ride – looks like it came straight from the National Enquirer. My story IS sensational. However, I can assure you this is the absolute TRUTH from my perspective.

As you’ll recall from my last post, Cowgirl and Dog: Separated At Birth? – several months ago I fell and suffered a concussion (with “help” from Arwen, our Wire-haired Pointing Griffon). After what seemed an eternity, the police – and finally, the ambulance – showed up. I remember being strapped into a claustrophobic-like collar and hoisted onto a gurney.

At first, I’m looking up at the sky. Then, I’m looking up at the ceiling of the ambulance from the stretcher. Next, I’m looking up at this dreamy paramedic – probably in his mid-twenties – and I’m thinking, “If this is heaven, it’s not so bad … I should’ve painted this guy in a Cowboy Hat before I died.”

But then I hear him calling the hospital …

“This is Dreamy Paramedic Guy. We are transporting a 65-year-old female with a concussion for treatment and …”

WHAAAAT???

The next thing I know, I’m practically screaming …

“I am NOT 65! I’m only 61, for Heaven’s Sakes! Please don’t make me any older than I already am!”

The paramedic, EMT’s, and the driver, are all dying laughing. (Obviously, they aren’t old enough to understand how important a few years are to an almost-senior-citizen – fighting her age all the way to the end.) And then I hear the mirthful, Dreamy Paramedic Guy say …

“Correction. We are transporting a very LUCID 61-year-old woman with a concussion!”

For the sake of those of you who need a visual, I’ve translated this whole experience into images, just for fun …

This is the Cowgirl Artist that went on the ambulance ride

This is the Cowgirl Artist that the Paramedic saw on the ambulance ride

And this is what the Paramedic probably should have looked like to a Cowgirl Artist my age

This Cowgirl Artist is still alive … and I say this with all sincerity.

I’m not just talking about having been absent from my blog for several months – I’m talking about the miracle that I am A L I V E. Period.

I’m alive. Our dog, Arwen, is alive (even more of a miracle.) The fact that both of us are still walking on God’s green (or now brown) earth is one of the reasons I titled this post Cowgirl And Dog … Separated At Birth.

We both had our brush with death. Me, because what she did almost killed me. And Arwen, because I could have almost killed her for what she did. There’s another reason we are separated at birth – but on to that little ditty in a minute. For now, here’s the story …

I was holding my husband’s hunting dog, Arwen, on a leash … trying to prevent her from scaring Mr. Estes – an older gentlemen who had come to our home to measure for our new kitchen cabinets. For some reason, as soon as I opened the front door, she bolted out – dragging me in the process.

It all happened so quickly – I knew as I was falling that I was in trouble … or perhaps I should say that I knew as I was twirling – spiraling – that I was in trouble. I was going D O W N.

And D O W N I went … flat as a pancake, down.

Seconds – Minutes – later? My eyes were open, but I felt like a strange ghost … observing that crazy Cowgirl, Deb Trotter, as she lay there – her head surrounded by a pool of blood. (Did I say BLOOD? Yuk. I hate blood.)

I could feel my fingers and toes tingling. It took a minute for my eyes to focus – my brain to register. Above me stood poor Mr. Estes, the cabinet-maker, white as a sheet (or as a ghost).

I thought to myself, “He’ll NEVER do our cabinets after this.” (Don’t ask why that’s the first thing that popped into my head … just chalk it up to a near death experience, coupled with months of remodel insanity).

“Don’t move.” he said. “I’ve called 911, and they’ll be here any minute now.”

Somehow, in spite of my throbbing head – I realized that Arwen was inside the house. How she got in there I’ll never know. She was barking and growling – whining. And I thought to myself, “Good. BE upset, dog. You little witch. I am gonna kill you if I live.”

Elmo, my little Shi Tzu, was outside … running around me. Sniffing. Confused. Worried.

I asked Mr. Estes if anyone had called my husband, John.

“He’s going to meet you at the hospital,” he answered.

Let me stop right here and just say – you have no idea what SCARED is until you find yourself lying in a pool of blood … afraid to close your eyes for even one second for fear of never opening them again. And this whole time, all I kept thinking was …

“John is going to KILL me.”

Me – Deb Trotter – who is always moving too fast. Rushing through tasks. Breaking dishes. Dropping casseroles when removing them from the oven. And tripping over cracks in the sidewalk that never seem to bother anyone else.

Silly Me – Deb Trotter – who thought she was so smart trying to control Arwen – our big Wirehaired Pointing Griffon, who’s obsessed with protecting her household from strangers.

Well, as you surely know, John did not kill me. Otherwise Arwen would be writing this post with her big paws – and I would be cremated. (At my request, my ashes would have been released … partly in Yellowstone with the Buffalo and mostly unpredictable geysers … and partly in the Blue Ridge Mountains – in a meadow filled with Honeysuckle and Queen Ann’s Lace.)

I was still envisioning the chiggers of my childhood on the Queen Ann’s Lace when the police showed up.

You are probably asking yourself, “Why did the police show up?” I have no idea. But they were super nice – especially when they offered to put Elmo back inside the house for fear he’d be run over by the oncoming ambulance.

Ah, yes … the ambulance. The paramedic – and the ride to the hospital – are another story all together. That’s the part I’ll share with you in Part 2 of this post … but for now, I’ll leave you with a post-traumatic experience that occurred after I’d been back home for several weeks.

I had just had my hair colored – with a darker ash blond rinse this time – thinking it would make me look fabulous. (I am, after all, going to celebrate being ALIVE.) But my hair soaked up the ash and decided to turn gray-blond. It actually made me looK – shall we say, more “mature?”

I knew John would notice (unlike most of the time, when he never mentions a new haircut, color, or frosting.) He walked through the door – took one look at Arwen and me sitting on the sofa – and said …

“You look just like Arwen.”

What do you think? Separated at Birth???

I’ve always had a special kinship with animals. I think most artists do.

When it comes to wild animals I’m especially drawn to deer.

As a child I had secret longing to own a deer as a pet. That would not have been wise, I know … but you have to understand, I was only six and had just seen Bambi at the movies. Bambi turned many a little girl into a deer-lover, and I was no exception.

Deer are like horses to me, in that their souls seem trapped in their eyes. There is something both wild and comforting about them – so I love the fact that deer hang out in our yard here in Cody, Wyoming. If I approach them very slowly they don’t seem to mind my taking their pictures.

A dear someone (no pun intended) has the same affinity for deer as I do and suggested I choose a gift from an Etsy artist for my birthday.

A Deer from Etsy for a Cowgirl’s birthday? Now, this is what I call deer-hunting!

Just look what I found …

LOVE!
Best of all – just imagine what a statement this sculpture – One Night In The Desert created by ElizabethFrank – would make in my studio!

Each and every one of these Etsy artists have captured the free spirit of deer in such an expressive way. I think they must all be kindred cowgirls.

I’m off to sit in the backyard and watch the deer.

Happy Trails!

Deb Trotter’s Cool Cowgirl Shades

Yee Ha! It’s another Wild West Wednesday!

I had originally promised to share how I created my Can Can Cowboy Boot for Cody’s Boot Scoot N Boogie … but sometimes things get in the way. What got in the way this time was iMovie. I had created a little video for you, but for some reason WordPress won’t cooperate today.

When a Cowgirl’s in a bind she knows how to improvise.

That’s just what I’ve got to do … so, I thought you might enjoy some photos I took on another Trotter Road Trip last Sunday. Yellowstone National Park beckoned and hubby John and I answered the call.

Here you go, pardner. A Cowgirl’s View of Yellowstone National Park …

Halfway to Yellowstone, we stopped in Wapiti when I spotted the perfect photo … this magnificent horse was a real camera hog. Don’t you love him?

Portions of Yellowstone were a bit spooky – including this canyon.

Speaking of spooky …

As always – on the way to Mammoth Hot Springs – I begged to take a walk among the intriguing rock formations.

The linear lines of these rocks can really stretch an artist’s imagination.

Is there a more fitting way to end this post? So quintessentially Wyoming!

See you on next Wild West Wednesday – hopefully I’ll have figured out my Boot Scootin N Boogie iMovie problem by then.

Happy Trails!

Oh, Italy! I was prepared to leave her – I really was.

Just as I had been advised, I took very specific essentials with me and left the rest at home. I was organized and had planned ahead on where to go, what to see, and even how much I could spend (or not.)

I took only a carry-on bag and a purse, and had fully reconciled myself to the fact that I would have to be content with only photographs for memories. There would be no loading up a bag of goodies to carry home … no bottles of Limoncello from Sorrento … no Italian leather boots from Florence or Rome … and definitely no delectable olive oil from Liguria. No, no, no.

I was coming back to the US empty handed. I was NOT going to be hassled in customs. I was NOT going to have to check a bag on the way back and have to worry about its getting lost. I was NOT going to fall a easy prey to Italy’s charms so much that I would be compelled to stuff my bag full of must-haves and become a laughing stock to my friends – or a victim to my husband who just KNEW I wouldn’t be able to stick to my plan.

But Italy is a wonderful trickster … she will deceive you, just as she did me – into purchasing some tangible memories you suddenly decide you cannot live without. And being the Cowgirl Spirit I am – I liken her to a Wyoming sunset. There is something so wildly exhilarating and alluring about her that I want to stake a claim on a piece of her so a part of her will always belong to me.

Oh, but I have learned, my friends. And aren’t you lucky that I figured out a way to actually come back home from Italy without breaking too many of my rules – while still succumbing to a few indulgences?

Yes. Here are my suggestions on how to get in – and out – of sweet, enticing Italy – as easily as possible – and how you can avoid the hassles of customs and bypass problems that tend to crop up …

Carry your Passport with you at all times … it’s the law. But make an extra copy and leave it in the hotel safe every single place you go.

Be smart about how you carry money. As I advised in last week’s post – take one credit card, one bank card, and at least $200 in cash. And change your dollars to Euro only as needed – say, every other day. This way, you won’t have extra Euro in your pocket when you get back to the US – especially coins. (The Italian post office is absolutely the most economical and safe place to exchange money.) And be sure to carry that money in a hidden place. Trust me, summer is not a great time to use a zippered money bag on a neck string – everyone can see it! I ended up stuffing these essentials into a small zip bag and taped it inside my bra with duck tape. (Ingenuity is the Cowgirl Way.)

Do not wear big, flashy jewelry and expensive clothes. Italian women do wear jewelry – but seem to prefer more conservative adornments than many Americans do. It’s the same with their clothing. You’ll stand out like a sore thumb to thieves. Believe me, I felt like a naked Cowgirl without one of my favorite signature Coreen Cordova necklaces or big turquoise rings and bracelets – but I listened to the warnings of others, and they were right. Leave those big bangles and one of a kind, stand out Artist pieces at home. They’re precious to you. I even even wore a fake wedding ring I bought at TJ Maxx – it looks real, but it was only $19.

Watch out for thieves and pickpockets, especially in crowded places where tourists are sure to tread – train stations, subways, buses, and especially in CROWDED, FAMOUS tourist sites: In Rome – The Coliseum. Vatican City – in particular the Sistine Chapel. The Trevi Fountain and the Pantheon. Other places I’ve heard mentioned are Pompeii, Venice – especially around St. Mark’s Squre ( which, by the way is a must see!) and Florence. I’m sure there are plenty more. Don’t be paranoid – just be cautious and AWARE. And don’t be afraid to YELL if you feel a hand in your back pocket. (By the way, the Italian word for NO is NO. Easy peasy.) You’ll learn more about pickpocket tricks in another one of my posts.

Either leave room in that dandy carry-on bag for souveniers and/or must-haves before you go … or bring along an inexpensive carry-on size, foldable tote. Then PLAN as you purchase – knowing that you’ll either have to gradually get rid of something as I did (another reason not to bring expensive clothing) or begin packing that little extra foldable tote with your finds. When it’s time to pack your bags to come back home, change and rearrange. I threw away several things to make room for a sweet little hand made Carnivale doll, a pair of sandals, and two linen skirts I simply could not pass up, and I brought them all back in my original carry-on.

Save receipts for everything you buy. Put them all in a little envelope to carry in your purse. You are allowed to bring back no more than 800 US Dollars worth of goods (that’s about 556 in Euros .) This way there is no question about how much your items cost and customs cannot hassle you. I checked Yahoo’s hand Currency Converter before I left home, just to make sure.

Do Not Be Fooled By Duty-Free shops. Their prices are no longer the bargains they once were and they may deceive you with, “Yes. It is acceptable to take this on the plane with you.” PLEASE NOTE: If you’re flying straight back to the US directly from Italy, you may purchase items such as food (olive oil) and liquor (my beloved Limoncello) and bring them on the plane duty free. BUT – if you are flying from one European country to another (as we did – from Italy to Germany) before you fly to the US – you may not bring those duty free items on the plane. We ended up putting our olive oil and Limoncello into the hands of German Customs. Sigh. PLUS – the only way you may bring back liquids is by checking them – so the whole carry-on bag concept is shot. Read more on this helpful site, Reid’s Italy.

If the man in your life is flying with you, tell him not to wear lots of Khaki! And nothing that even remotely suggests “military.” My son, Whit, wore hiking boots, a dark T-shirt, khaki travel pants, and a khaki shirt made by Columbia – lightweight, comfortable, and easy to wash and dry overnight. Problem was, he also wore a hat I purchased for him as a gift, similar to this. I thought it was cute on him – it was khaki in color as well, except that there was a cute plaid pattern over the khaki. I teased him that it looked like a “Castro Hat,” which I later learned is what it’s actually called! Little did I know that the customs officials thought the same thing. He was stopped, questioned, and harassed five times – including an unbelievable examination of his bag and passport – over and over again. Apparently, the German officials thought he was a mercenary or terrorist. It was NOT fun.

Do Not Even THINK about trying to sneak on a paper shopping bag with anything in it if you already have a personal bag (like a purse) and a carry-on bag! You’ll have to pay to eheck one of those bags – just as we witnessed when a man tried to carry on a paper bag with a piece of artwork in it. No can do. He had to check one of his bags, which made him miss his flight, poor guy.

Cowgirl Up and be prepared to go through customs all over again once you enter the US. I thought after we survived the ordeal with the Castro Hat we were home free, but I should have known better. It’s been a long time since I’ve been to Europe. In this day and age – what with terrorists, new airline regulations and lost luggage, and frustrated, angry passengers – paranoid, picky custom agents are a reality … even to their own US citizens. Just grin and bear it like I did.

You know what a sucker I am for Cowgirl Boots, right? I’m an avid collector of Old Gringo Boots and have always dreamed of fabricating a pair of one of a kind Old Gringos … Deb Trotter Style.

Well, I finally did it. I recently created my very own Deb Trotter-Cowboy’s Sweetheart Boot … not for Old Gringo, although if you are reading this, Old Gringo – BRING IT ON.

I designed and painted the Can Can Cowboy boot (seen at the top of this post) – for the Boot Scootin’ Boogie – which takes place as part of the Buffalo Bill Art Show and Sale, held every year right here in Cody, Wyoming.

If you joined me here at Cowboy’s Sweetheart for last week’s Wild West Wednesday post, Cody Artists Go Boot Scootin’ - you already know that I was finally given the opportunity to (literally) kick up my Cowgirl (or Cowboy) Boots with nineteen other western artists whom I’ve always admired.

Nineteen artists who – just like me – jumped at the chance to bring their own creative skills and artistic visions to life by painting and designing a Cowboy Boot made from a standard mold … a three and a half feet tall Cowboy Boot, at that.

The best part about creating one of these boots “Deb Trotter Style” is that I could share my own vision of the Wild West – without ever once worrying about how my work might compare with any of the other artists’ boots.

In fact, I loved the process so much … juxtaposing antique paper, vintage photos, acrylic paint, and plaster … that I wasn’t at all deterred by the talent and reputations of the other artists involved in the boot art “competition.” How I managed to do that, I now have no idea. Just take a look of three of my favorite boots created by some of my fellow artists here in Cody, Wyoming …

This boot is not painted – it’s completely sewn – in leather!

This boot – Buffalo Bill Biscuits – has a “hat” lid to store all kinds of tasty goodies. Chocolate Chip Cookies, anyone?

Colorful, Cool, and Creepy. Check out the wild scorpion.

To see more really cool Boot Scootin’Boogie Artist Boots, head to this link and LIKE Boot Scoot ‘N Boogie down Main Street on Facebook.

Next week on Wild West Wednesday, I’ll show you how I created my Can Can Cowboy Boot – AND … I’ll tell you how you can actually buy raffle tickets for a chance to WIN one – or any – of the twenty Artist Boots pictured on the Facebook site.

Deb Trotter’s Italian Carry-On Bag

I must admit, I had my doubts about travelng to Italy with just the basic essentials. Italy is, after all, one of the world’s fashion capitols. I had visions of Sophia Loren, Gina Lollobrigida, and Elisabetta Canalis studying me beneath their Ray-Bans, secretly thinking, “Mama Mia! Cowgirl Boots?”

I dreamed of wearing long, flowing dresses and big straw hats – even if I couldn’t bear to ditch the boots. (You know – you can take the Cowgirl out of Wyoming, but …)

I’d studied travel guides, books, and online forums – all of which advised that Italian women do not wear big straw hats. (They also said that Italian women seldom wear hats at all – but being of fair skin and skin cancer mind, I decided I should take one anyway.)

I’d read and heard a lot about how I would be much happier in the end if I packed light – as well as how much peace of mind I would gain knowing that I wouldn’t have to worry about lost luggage (which is more and more of a problem these days.)

A friend of mine who went to Italy with her husband last summer told me to choose versatile, practical clothing; comfortable shoes; essentials like underwear (underwear is one of my essentials, anyway); and sunscreen.

But her last bit of advice was this … After you’ve chosen what to take in your ONE great carry-on bag, take out half of everything you’ve packed and head for Italia.

Wait! Did she really say ONE carry-on bag? Auuuuugh! The Horror. But my friend is a savvy gal – so I believed her. Thank God.

First, I researched the required size and weight for carry-on bags on International flights and discovered that they may differ from carry-ons dimensions acceptable for flying inside the good old USA.

The acceptable dimensions of an international carry-on bag for my airline (Lufthansa) was no more than 20″ wide or tall. The exact size may change with another carrier – so give yourself time to check – and do it well before you leave in case you need to purchase a bag. The ones I had on hand were either too big or too small.

I also discovered that my carry-on could weigh no more than 17 pounds – including the weight of the bag. Whew. Can you imagine checking in and discovering that you’d have to throw something away or check you bag after all that work? So, I decided – NO WHEELS. They usually add from 2 to 4 pounds to the weight of the bag itself. And just to be safe, I drove to Wally World and bought an inexpensive luggage scale.

Finally, I purchased the fashion-forward, roomy bag in the photo at the top of this post (the matching bracelets were totally NOT Deb Trotter style.) I also threw in a flat nylon fold out bag for larger gifts or must-haves to bring back to the US – in which case, I’d have had to check at least one bag in and risk its getting lost. I took it anyway – just in case – but never ended up using it.

The airline allowed passengers to carry a personal item as well – so I chose a medium sized leather handbag where I stashed my kindle, a paperback book, several snack bars, tylenol ( and a bottle of water – purchased after I got to the airport. ) I considered taking my small Macbook but decided I was going on a REAL vacation with my family – so, no computer stuff.

BEST thing I EVER did.

After about two days of walking around in Rome, seeing all those poor people lugging huge suitcases down cobblestone streets … and after several more days of realizing that I wanted to wear the same favorite skirt and top over and over again … I got it.

You really can travel to Italy in the summer and live it up with just one carry-on bag.

Here are the final items I chose to pack …

6 short-sleeved tops – 2 of them dressy

1 black skirt & 1 black pair of travel pants – both washable, that dry overnight

1 pair of gray J Jill capris

1 J Jill gray sweater

3 pair of comfy shoes (2 walking sandals & 1 dressy sandals)

2 pair of thin socks, 6 pair of underwear, 1 bra, and 1 Spanx Skinny Britches Skort (great under a skirt in the summer)

1 pair of Magellan’s Support Knee Highs

5 liquids inside a 1 quart-size zip-it plastic bag ( shampoo, , toothpaste, mascara, lipstick, & make-up remover towelettes )

Sunscreen powder

Accessories (1 packable hat, 1 scarf, 2 pair earrings, 1 necklace, and a fake diamond wedding ring – helpful if you’re young and beautiful and want to avoid unwanted attention – or if you’re a “mature woman” like me who feels naked without her wedding ring but would rather not wear the real thing)

my iPhone, point & shoot Nikon camera, small wrap-around shoulder handbag, $300 in cash, one credit card, and of course – my Passport (as well as a copy of my Passport)

Art Supplies – moleskine sketch pad, travel journal, drawing pencils, & fav battery operated eraser

Here are the items I used …

4 tops – 1 of them dressy

the black skirt & capris (I threw the travel pants away – too hot)

the J Jill sweater (but I only needed it on the plane)

1 pair of sandals (the 2 other tried and true pairs blistered my feet)

the cowgirl boots (I wore them every night except one)

the outlet adaptors (the silk neck wallet drove me batty – more about that in another post)

everything listed on #9 above

support knee highs (my feet swell, so I need them on the plane)

shampoo, lipstick, & make up remover towelettes (they felt great at noon when it was hot)

DEFINITELY the sunscreen powder (it’s easy to reapply and doesn’t count as a liquid)

All the accessories (the hat and scarf were used the least – too hot!)

Everything listed on #13 – I only brought my Verizon iPhone for taking quick photos since (unlike AT & T’s version) it’s incompatible in Europe)

All my art supplies

Eventually I threw out some items that I realized I’d never use, that hurt (shoes), or that were proving burdensome. You’ll hear more about this in several other posts …
